Preamble

Welcome to Scenic Route to Alaska - Follow 40 Starting Thursday September 3, 2015

In 2013, we rode out to Vancouver Island to be a part of our nephew's and niece-in-law's wedding, which became the Westcoast Wedding Whirlwind. Part of that journey was taking the BC Ferries' trip from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert, 16 hours of spectacular scenery viewed from the ferry, a trip so worthwhile that we have encouraged people to do the trip before BC Ferries decides it is no longer cost effective to operate. In fact, the trip was so worthwhile, it inspired this journey, and blog. We thought that if 16 hours was great, four and a half days would be unbelievable. As such, the centrepiece of this trip is the ferry ride from Bellingham, Washington to Whittier, Alaska.

Unlike our usual modus operandi, we are bringing body guards with us: John, Niels and Stan, all veteran riders and intimidating when they need to be. They will be tasked with providing the protection we may require passing through the wilds of Alaska, Yukon and Northern BC and Alberta. Plus, Stan is bringing his wife Janet's home made "Eatmore" bars, singly reason enough to include his participation on this trip.

If you want to see our anticipated land route in Google Maps, click here: Anticipated Land Route.  It was not possible to show the route in chronological order because the ferry ride is in the middle of the trip, so what you see is our landing in Alaska, the route home, then the route to the departure ferry terminal in Bellingham. The ferry ride does not show on the map, so you will have to use your imagination.

If you want to see where we are on Google Maps, click here: Scenic Route location.

Feel free to post a comment. They will be moderated so if you sling mud at us, one of us will be sadly disappointed. Probably me.

Thanks for following. We hope you will have fun living vicariously as we make our way around western Canada and the U.S.

Hey Howi! Is it possible to show exactly where the ferry tracks as well? Thanks

I hope to have the Spotwalla show the ferry location however, I will need to find a place for the tracking device to live with a clear line of sight to the sky. I do have the link to the Alaska Ferries tracking page, which I will publish later in the week. Thanks for asking!

Wow guys, you got off to a good start! You are a Spragins, aren't you? In that case, you should be three hours behind .... just kidding. Have a great trip, and looking forward to following your adventure. Take care.

Watching you from the "Big Smoke" where it's in the 30's right now. I've suggested to your friends to hide a slab of bacon in one of your packs as you ride through the remote areas of Alaska to add some adventure to the stories. The bears may not be the only hazard, trying to dodge moose & deer on a bike will get the adrenaline running...

Ride safe
Your pal Daryl

Happy Anniversary, safe travels, have fun ( I know you already are, by dodging bullets,!) Guess who.

Hi Howi & Nan.... did you see the Ocean Park gang, waving madly at you, as you sailed past Point Roberts, off in the distance? The usual neighbourhood suspects, we're at biker Randy & Diana's last night, toasting your adventure. I think we toasted too much!
